FACT:Medications are being stolen from homes for sale, during showing appointments and during open houses. Prescription pain medications, anti-anxiety and stimulant medications, and even over-the-counter cough and cold medications are targets. HOW THEY DO IT: Typically a team (perhaps as a couple, a family, or as friends) poses as prospective buyers. As one person keeps the Realtor busy with questions, others look for easily accessible prescription drugs to steal. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Here are three easy steps you can take to prevent drug theft while your house is for sale: 1. Secure medications in the same way that you would a checkbook or jewelry. 2. Place prescription drugs in a locked container and hide them in a location that would take a significant amount of time to find, or 3. Take your medications with you.
